Travel back in time to a Christmas long ago with a live radio play adaptation of the classic Judy Garland musical “Meet Me in St. Louis.” Chock-full of timeless songs like “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “The Trolley Song” and “The Boy Next Door,” this perennial favorite now comes to the stage in an old-time radio format, adapted by Joe Landry, who has previously written successful live radio plays of “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “The 39 Steps.” This nostalgic tale follows the four Smith daughters as they come of age in the year leading up to the 1904 world’s fair.

It usually happens that an artist, even a prolific one, is not canonized until they’ve been gone for a few decades. Stephen Sondheim, 86 and going strong, is a rare exception. His musical theatre works are not only tried and true, but are increasingly performed as new generations realize the depth of his genius as both lyricist and composer. Rochester audiences have recently enjoyed quality local productions of Sunday in the Park with George (1984), A Little Night Music (1973), Into the Woods (1987), Assassins (1990), and Geva Theatre’s current production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1964). On Saturday, October 29th, Rochester Lyric Opera is offering a one-time opportunity to hear songs from some of these shows and many others in a well-crafted revue of both well- and lesser-known Sondheim songs called You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow (1983).

Sondheim’s oeuvre lends itself well to a revue format. His songs and story ideas are astonishingly diverse and capable of myriad interpretations, and some amazing songs are hidden in some of his less-performed musicals. Recognizing this, artful producers have taken it upon themselves to design revues that bring those hidden gems to light, as well as feature favorites that have attained classic status. You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow is one of these, developed by Drama Desk-nominated director Paul Lazarus, and is not only an elegant overview of Sondheim’s 60 year Broadway career, but also a stellar showcase of jaunty melodies that were either unproduced or had to be cut from final editions, heartrendingly beautiful ballads, gallivanting lyrics, and revelatory hits.

The first performances of  You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow  were given at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. Rochester’s new Lyric Theatre is the venue for this one-of-a-kind musical evening, featuring seven professional singers and a jazz-style combo of piano, guitar, bass and drums. Well-known Rochester singer and director Cecile Saine both sings in and stage-directs the Rochester Lyric Opera production. She is joined by singers Emily Helenbrook (a former winner of RLO’s Angelone Voice Competition), Susan Cotroneo, Robb Zimmerman, Jacob Stebly, and Jeffrey Miller, with musical direction by Jared Chase and Julie Covach. It is also the debut of the new youth chorus, Lyric Voices, directed by Vincent Salvadge.

Saine says, “To work with such a talented cast of singers has truly made it possible to see the kaleidoscope of colors in these vignettes of early Sondheim art.” By turns exhilarating, hilarious, haunting and clever, Sondheim’s music both tantalizes and transports. The performance on October 29th at 7:30 includes a gala reception, and is, simply put, not to be missed.

John Musto's
John Musto's "Bastianello"
Nazareth College Department of Music and Rochester Lyric Opera present a staged production of John Musto's opera Bastianello
Emmy winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist John Musto’s comic opera, Bastianello, was composed in collaboration with librettist Mark Campbell for five singers and a chamber orchestra. Sung in English and set in the 1700s, Bastianello tells the story of the beautiful but moody Amadora who, on her wedding day, goes to the wine cellar to bring up more wine for her celebration. Once she opens the cask, her joy turns to despair as she realizes she will never again be as happy as at that moment. Her father and mother-in-law soon join Amadora in weeping at life’s cruelty. When her new husband, Luciano, finds his entire family in tears next to a now-empty cask of wine, he explodes in rage and deserts his new wife on their wedding night, only to return after finding six people as foolish as his family.

The Bastianello artistic team, cast, and production team consist of Rochester Lyric Opera and Nazareth College-affiliated artists: Susan Cotroneo (Eustacia), Amy Cochrane (Ortensia), Katie Hannigan (Amadora), Kimberly Upcraft (Ettalina), Jessica Best (Stelladora), Matthew Valverde (Bastianello the Younger), Robert Zimmerman (Lambent), Mario Martinez (Bastianello the Elder), Keith Brown (Ippolito/Frediano/Lino), Zachary James (Luciano), JJ Hudson (stage director), Gabrielle LeBare (assistant stage manager), and David Hult (concert master). Jared Chase will conduct the performance of Bastianello.

Opera Week 2015: Mozart's Bastien and Bastienna presented by Houghton Lyric Theatre
A story of love and suspicion... with a little bit of magic! Sung in English

This one act opera by Mozart is not done often so this is a wonderful opportunity to see it. Bastienna, a shepherdess, fears that her “dearest friend”, Bastien, has forsaken her for another pretty face, and decides to go into the pasture to be comforted by her flock of lambs. Before she can leave, however, she runs into Colas, the village soothsayer. Bastienna requests the help of his magical powers to help win back her Bastien. Colas comforts her with the knowledge that Bastien has not abandoned her, rather, he’s merely been distracted lately by ‘the lady of the manor’. His advice is to act coldly towards Bastien, which will make him come runningack. Misunderstandings and magic spells ensue, and love wins out.

A scene, or a segue of scenes, from an opera or show can give a peek into the drama, and a glimpse of favorite characters and songs in context without mounting the entire production. A program of scenes takes on a life of its own, as the dramatic impact from one scene melds into another, and creates new connections and character moments. Arias are amazing, but who else is actually on stage and what is happening before and after that famous song?
